If you have diabetes, you are at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is a name for several different diseases which affect the blood vessels which surround and nourish the retina. Diabetic retinopathy is a serious disease of the retina, the nerve layer that lines the back of your eyes and is responsible for sending images to your brain. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause a patient to have poor vision, or even blindness. Diabetic retinopathy can get worse over the years. In the beginning the blood vessels surrounding the retina they get weak, which can ultimately cause blood to leak into the retina from the blood vessels. This is non-proliferative retinopathy and is the most common type of retinopathy. It can cause blurred vision in the initial stages. If blood sugar levels are not reduced the retinopathy will worsen over time. The weakened blood vessels can end up breaking and bleeding, which can cause scar tissue to form and pull on the retina, causing retinal detachment. Diabetic retinopathy can be diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam which includes thorough analysis of the retina and the blood vessels surrounding it. While there is not a cure for diabetic retinopathy, today laser treatment can be very effective in preventing vision loss. However, it is important that this New Milford vision care treatment is done before the retina has been damaged. There are also other types of surgeries which can be performed to help with this serious eye health issue.
